Autism

Autism can cause a variety of motor disorders and delays in motor milestones. Dr. McIntyre takes the time to understand your child’s unique presentation including sensory impairments, social issues, and language delays and works to design a program your child engages with to promote the most gains through therapy. Whether it be toe walking, coordination disorder, low muscle tone or any other motor issue, Milestone Pediatric Therapy can help your child through therapeutic play and intervention.

Check out Dr. McIntyre’s blog for more information on how physical therapy can help children with ASD reach their goals!

Developmental Coordination Disorder

Does your child have problems with jumping, skipping, doing jumping jacks or other coordination tasks? Developmental Coordination Disorder is a condition where children struggle with bilateral coordination and whole body tasks compared to their peers. Milestone addresses underlying core and strength impairments while breaking down tasks into their specific parts to help your child learn the coordination skills they are struggling with. Research shows improvements in coordination skills can lead to improvements in overall confidence, increased peer interaction AND even improved performance in school.

Developmental/Gross Motor Delay

Developmental Delay and Gross Motor Delay are both characterized by a child not meeting their developmental milestones by an appropriate age with or without any known diagnosis to cause the delay in milestones. If your child isn’t rolling/sitting up independently by 8-9 months, walking independently by 18 months, or running/jumping by 2.5-3 years old to keep up with their peers, your child may have gross motor delay and may benefit from physical therapy intervention. Milestone will help foster your child through the developmental progression and address underlying impairments keeping your child from achieving their milestones!

Orthopedic Injuries

Whether it be a surgery, strain, sprain, fracture, or other orthopedic condition (including flat feet and in-toe walking), Milestone makes recovering from orthopedic conditions fun and quick! Dr. McIntyre has years of experience working with clients with a variety orthopedic conditions (of various ages!) that she draws on to make your child’s interventions more beneficial and targeted to improving their condition. Therapeutic play keeps kids engaged in therapy so they get stronger faster and back to playing without restrictions!

Pediatric Flat Foot

Pediatric Flat Foot is a common orthopedic condition in kids where the arch of their foot does not develop appropriately. Commonly this leads to difficulties with balance, gross motor skills, and sometimes leg pain. Dr. McIntyre will perform a thorough evaluation, recommend orthotics/inserts if necessary to correct your child’s foot alignment, and then work with your child to help them reach all their milestone’s and eliminate any pain that is a barrier to play.

For more information on Pediatric Flat Feet check out Dr. McIntyre’s blog on the subject!

Toe Walking

Toe Walking, or Equinus Gait Pattern, is a condition where a child predominantly walks and plays on his/her toes. Frequent toe walking pattern is seen as atypical as early as 12-18 months of age. It is critical to begin intervention early to prevent abnormal patterns from becoming habit and to prevent range of motion and strength from reducing significantly. Although toe walking is seen as idiopathic in the literature, toe walking typically is a symptom of some other developmental problem. Common root causes include sensory processing disorder, visual impairments, vestibular impairments, and flat feet. Dr. McIntyre takes the time to not only address impairments in range of motion and strength in your child but works to find the root cause of the toe walking and address it through play or referral to appropriate providers as necessary.

Torticollis

Congenital Muscular Torticollis is a condition where an infant presents with a head tilt preference to one side and a rotational preference to the opposite side. Milestone offers a well-developed Torticollis Intervention Program aimed at fostering parental involvement and education throughout the entire plan of care. The program addresses passive and active range of motion impairments as well as promotes symmetrical development of motor milestones. If your infant has torticollis or you think might have torticollis, please contact Milestone today! Reasearch shows, the earlier age an infant is at the start of intervention the faster the recovery!

Clinic Sessions

Clinic sessions are your traditional therapy sessions. These occur at Milestone Pediatric Therapy’s business location. Sessions focus on gaining strength, balance, range of motion, and other important components of care your child needs to meet his/her goals. Clinic sessions are important as it allows your child and Dr. McIntyre to work on specific impairments that will begin the building blocks of progressing toward overall goals. Dr. McIntyre will have access to therapeutic aids in clinic to progress your child along their milestones.

Mobile Therapy Sessions

Mobile therapy sessions are specifically designed to work with your child on the specific task that is challenging in the environment where they perform it most often. These sessions are tailored to meet family-specific goals. For a community example, if your child has difficulty playing on the playground because of balance and strength impairments, we will meet and work on playground tasks including climbing, sliding, and monkey bars. For a home example, if your child struggles with getting into/out of the bathtub or bed independently, we will work in your home on how to support your child through these tasks and make them as independent as possible. Mobile therapy services also offer increased convenience for your family and improved compliance rates with your child’s plan of care. If you are interested in this type of session, please contact Milestone Pediatric Therapy. Clients will begin with an initial evaluation in clinic prior to working in the home/community setting.
